Alibaba wants you to pay for things on your smartphone by scanning your face


he future of payments may be staring us right in the face. 
 
Alibaba, the Chinese ecommerce giant with more money than it knows what to do with, is planning to introduce a facial recognition option called Smile to Pay that would let shoppers pay for purchases on their smartphones by scanning their faces. 
"Online payment to buy things is always a big headache," Jack Ma, cofounder and chairman of Alibaba, said while demonstrating the new feature during a presentation at CeBIT conference in Hanover, Germany on Sunday. He highlighted concerns about passwords and security. "Today we show you a new technology in the future of how people can buy things online."

Tesla is unveiling a new product soon — but it's not a car


Elon Musk is getting ready to make Tesla Motors more than just an electric car company.
The serial entrepreneur tweeted on Monday that he plans to showcase a new Tesla product at the company's Hawthorne Design Studio in California on April 30.
The tweet offers no clue as to the new product category, but Musk pretty much revealed his Tesla diversification plans last month during the company's earning call.

“We are going to unveil the Tesla home battery, the consumer battery that would be for use in people’s houses or businesses fairly soon,” Musk said, according to Bloomberg.

Google teams with Johnson & Johnson to improve robot surgeon vision

Google wants in on the operating room, at least so it can help robot surgeons to a better job.
The search giant and inveterate experimenter has partnered with Ethicon, one of the U.S.’s biggest operating room tools and equipment suppliers, to develop new vision systems that could improve results when using robotic surgery tools. A division of Johnson & Johnson, Ethicon "makes a host of surgical products and is in the overwhelming majority of hospitals around the country," said Johnson & Johnson VP of Media Relations Ernie Knewitz. 

While the financial terms of the deal, which was announced on Friday, were not disclosed, it will let Ethicon and Google's Life Sciences group collaborate on a robot-assisted surgical platform. A Google spokesperson told Mashable in an email that the deal doesn’t actually involve Google's burgeoning robotics group (the company has bought up more than half-a-dozen robotics firms in recent years). Instead, Ethicon will use Google's machine vision and image analysis software to help surgeons see more clearly as they operate (to, for instance, better highlight blood vessels). 


The technology could also be used to provide surgeons using robotics tools with visual information "that’s relevant to the surgery at just the right time," the Google rep said. Most so-called robot surgeons using, say, the da Vinci robot surgery system operate while staring at a giant screen.
Johnson & Johnson's Ethicon division has decades of experience in surgical tool development, but has only been in the robotic surgery space for a short period of time, Knewitz noted. This deal "is about expanding our presence in that space and developing new platforms for minimally invasive surgical tools,” he added.
Google and Johnson & Johnson representatives acknowledge, though, that these are early days. The deal needs some regulatory approval and the extent of the collaboration is not fully spelled out.

9-Year-Old Kid Hacks Android Smartphone In 15 Minutes

Wondering how secure your Android smartphone is? Well, a 9-year-old cybersecurity expert has demonstrated how hackers could steal contacts, call logs and messages within just 15 minutes.
Speaking at the Security B-sides Conference last week, Harmony School of Science third-grader Reuben Paul took to the stage to promote safer smartphone security. His Keynote speech stressed the importance of being extra careful when downloading apps, showing how even seemingly safe software can be used by cybercriminals to access sensitive data and snoop on your location.

According to Fox, the 9-year-old Paul completed the hack within a quarter of an hour, claiming that it can happen anywhere, to anyone and at any time.
“If a child can do it then a regular hacker can do it… so I just want everybody to be aware [and to] be more careful when you download games and stuff like that,” he said.
Paul is a rising star of the computer security industry, speaking at a number of other conferences as well as acting as CEO of Prudent Games; a company which attempts to teach people about threats through educational apps. The company’s games include Cracker Proof, which teaches good password practice, and Crack Me If you Can, which teaches all about brute force attacks.
Paul’s speech at the Security B-sides Conference again highlighted how important it to be cautious when downloading apps and games.

Your Android Wear watch now finds your missing phone

The days of tearing apart your apartment in search of your lost smartphone are coming to an end. Two years after making its mobile debut, Google is porting its phone-finding Android Device Manager to Android Wear. Now, so long as you have your smartwatch attached to your wrist, you'll be able to Marco Polo your way to it. Simply say to the watch, "Ok, Google. Start. Find my phone" and your phone will automatically ring at full volume. This feature will be rolling out automatically to all Android Wear devices in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, you'll still be out of luck if your phone is out of earshot, as the watch-based app doesn't include map-based tracking like the mobile version does.

Nissan's futuristic three-seater EV The project cancelled?

Bad news for anyone who wanted a three-seated electric supercar, because Nissan's Batmobile-esque BladeGlider isn't coming to market. Autoblog is reporting that recent executive changes at the company have meant that new executives are having second thoughts about selling the insane vehicle to the public. Incoming planning officer Philippe Klein told Autocar that the long-awaited retail model was "not among the [company's] immediate priorities," which is executive speak for shut up and stop asking.
The three-seater BladeGlider may have looked like it would remain in concept car limbo, but was conceived as a "cheap" sports car for younger types who didn't want a Porsche. The vehicle, based in part on the Ariel Atom, used an electric drivetrain and motors mounted on each of the wheels that apparently used less energy than the Nissan Leaf EV. Admittedly, Klein hasn't shut the door on the car ever coming to market, but it's not hard to guess that an expensive, futuristic sports car designed by his predecessors may not be his biggest priority.

The world’s largest cruise ships are less like vessels, more like cities

Thirty of the world’s largest cruise ships measure more than 1,000 feet in length. That’s roughly the length of four Boeing 747s or nearly three football fields, and that measurement doesn’t even account for the height and width of these ships. The largest ship ever built, the Allure of the Seas, can carry up to 6,296 passengers, making it more of a floating town (filled with stores, restaurants, museums, and plazas) rather than simply an ocean vessel. It’s even longer than the U.S.S. Nimitz aircraft carrier. And with the passing of every decade, it seems a new ship vies for the record of world’s largest.



Some experts think the Allure of the Seas (and a similar-sized sister ship that’s currently planned) could be the biggest these ships will ever get. They are worried about these large ships’ ability to handle emergency scenarios, like fires, as well as the ability of ports to accommodate them. The Costa Concordia, which sank in 2012 and killed 32 (its captain was recently found guilty of manslaughter), is being seen as an example of how perilous a situation can be when disaster strikes these essentially small towns. But these experts probably thought the same thing about the ships built a decade ago. As technology and engineering continue to advance, who knows how big the cruise ships of tomorrow will become?

These jeans use RFID-blocking fabric to prevent identify theft


Developed in a partnership between clothing designer Betabrand and security software company Norton, a new pair of men’s jeans, as well as a women’s blazer, will include a lining of radio frequency identification (RFID) blocking material to prevent a trend the two companies are calling “digital pickpocketing.” According to the crowdfunding page for the jeans, the two companies claim “that more than 10 million identities are digitally pickpocketed every year” and “70% of all credit cards will be vulnerable to such attacks” by 2015.
The READY Active Jeans will include this material on both a front and back pocket, usually the spot where you would store credit or debit cards in a wallet. In addition, the Work-It Blazer for women will include one pocket lined with the blocking material.
Including this type of technology within an article of clothing isn’t cheap though. The regular MSRP on the jeans is priced at $168 and the blazer is priced at $198. However, both can be funded at a discount on the Betabrand site. Betabrand expects to ship the jeans during late February and the blazer during mid-March 2015. That’s assuming the blazer reaches the initial funding goal. The jeans have already surpassed the funding goal and will definitely become a product.

Of course, there are many less expensive alternatives if you are really concerned about digital thieves taking advantage of RFID. There are a number of RFID-blocking wallets carried by online retailers as well as upstart companies that are developing pouches and cases with similar fabric specifically for smartphones. The downside to using that type of case would be having to flip open the case each time the phone was being used or slip it out of the pouch to check it. However, it could be ideal for travel when a phone is tucked away in a backpack or purse.

Ford’s e-bike knows when you’re tired of pedaling, takes over



Big companies love acronyms, and Ford is no exception. It calls the MoDe: Pro a “commercial multi-modal transport system,” but we prefer “e-bike.” The result of an internal design competition at Ford, the electric two-wheeler made a strange standout alongside smartphones and wearables at Mobile World Congress this week, but it’s designed to work in concert with both.



A 200w motor enables the MoDe: Pro to hit speeds of up to 15 miles per hour, and the 9 Ah battery gives it an hour and a half of continuous use, but it’s really designed to run in spurts when you need it. That’s where the mobile synergy comes into play. If you pair the bike with a heart-rate sensor, the motor can be configured to kick in when your heart rate reaches a certain level. In other words, it recognizes when you’re working hard and provides a little extra help.

You can also use the voice-activated app to check the charge on the bike and access stats. The same app enables bike tracking, route-planning, and delivery scheduling. That’s because Ford sees this as a commercial fleet product that you tote around inside a van, and then deploy at a destination. It can be folded up and docked in the van, which automatically charges the battery, and modular boxes on the tail-rack offer ample storage space. When folded, it can also be towed like a wagon for rolling through pedestrianized areas, or inside buildings. Ford expects it will appeal to delivery services, tradesmen, couriers, and even municipal services like the police.
